Front or Back Porch Replacement or Repair?
Our homes are generally a place we take pride in, and nothing welcomes guests like a well designed front porch. Since it is literally the first thing anyone sees of your house, how it is perceived from the roadside, as well as by approaching guests, is a detail that can be worrisome to the gracious hostess or host. A front or back porch replacement or a repair is a great way to upgrade the look of your home. The correct porch design will soften the appearance of your homes façade and add some outside living. A new porch will create a new look that is pleasing to the senses, and provides a space for healthy outdoor living.

Are you wondering whether you just need a porch repair or do you need a complete replacement of your existing porch? First of all, if your porch is original to your homes construction, it is very important to the overall aesthetics of your home that a new porches railing, balusters, porch posts, columns and newel posts remain exactly as they are, so you keep the same look.
Unfortunately, this seldom happens even by homeowners who have the best of intentions. It is very possible that your porch, as you know it, may be a complete loss. There are a few reasons for this some beyond the homeowner’s and contractor’s control.
Before beginning any restoration or rebuild on your house, it’s worthwhile to document your existing joinery and spacing details with photographs and measurements on all the components, even when the parts are beyond saving. What’s left may provide clues to construction techniques that gave the porch its initial long life.
Porch Replacement and Repair
Repairing Old Porch Floors, Historically, porch floorboards were milled from vertical grain 5/4″ tongue-and-groove Douglas fir, which meant they were fully 1″ thick. The ends were often shaped in a half-round bullnose by an onsite carpenter, the better to shed water. After World War II, board thicknesses shrank to 3/4”, and the ends were typically square-cut, both compromises in terms of the expected lifespan of the wood.
